A Day in the Life of a XuKeeper: Beth

It’s time for the second edition of “A Day in the Life of a XuKeeper”, where you’ll get a behind the scenes look at some of the people at DataXu and what makes them tick. Today, meet Beth Logan, Senior Director of Optimization, based in our Boston headquarters.

Explain your role at DataXu. What do you do?
I lead the team responsible for the automated ‘data-driven’ algorithms in our platform.  Examples are the machine learning that drives buying decisions, Cruise Control, Spend Forecasting and pacing. Our extended team has two parts: the Optimization Team data scientists who propose and/or prototype new features, and the Data Science Engineering Squad who add the new features to our platform, often with help from other engineering teams.

How did you land at DataXu?

I grew up in Australia where I studied engineering and computer science before working as a software engineer at a startup for a few years. I then moved to the UK to do a PhD in Speech Recognition and while there, got excited about moving to the US as it was the nexus of my field.  I moved to Boston where I worked for a couple of big Californian companies in their Cambridge R&D labs.  I had the chance to work in many data-related fields and with amazing people, but I increasingly yearned to work at a smaller company again with HQ in Boston.  So when my group  got relocated to the West Coast, I looked around in Boston and incredibly stumbled across DataXu by googling “machine learning cambridge”.

What’s exciting you the most about DataXu’s future?

The impact we can increasingly have on companies’ bottom line by helping them effectively advertise to the right people in the right places. It’s been a very exciting ride thus far and each change in the industry just opens more opportunities for a smart company like us.

DataXu’s core values are: Excellence, Collaboration, Innovation, Trust and Customer Obsession… the value that resonates with you most is….

The obvious answer would be Innovation, though Customer Obsession is a close second since I’m most motivated by technology that has impact.
