A Day in the Life of a XuKeeper: Martin

This week in a day in the life of a XuKeeper, meet Martin Bomio. This software engineer, based in our Uruguay office, just had his two year anniversary here at DataXu! Keep reading to see what makes Martin tick.

Explain your role at DataXu. What do you do?

I am a member of the Data Science Engineering or DSE squad. We work closely with the optimization team, the group of data scientists responsible for creating, designing and prototyping new features. Our responsibility is to make them robust, scalable and performant at large scale. Some of the projects we’ve worked on are: the machine learning system, Cruise Control, Spend Forecasting.

Since January, I’ve been working in the streaming squad helping migrate the ETL system, also known as learning-system, to AWS (Amazon Web Services). Some of the responsibilities of this system are parsing incoming events from logs, producing ‘report’ drops to other systems such as our reporting warehouse, machine learning system and the real time system.

How did you land at DataXu?

Two years ago, I was finishing the last year of my five-year bachelor’s degree in Telematics engineering when I received an email from my university offering a job position as an intern in the recently inaugurated DataXu’s Uruguayan office. The proposal contained lots of words like “big data”, “rocket science”, “data science” and “machine learning” which, at the time, I was not completely sure I understood, but definitely wanted to know more about them. Three months later, I was offered a full time position.

What excites you the most about DataXu’s future?

The fact that we are getting to a stable platform that covers every channel to deliver a data-based, market driven, marketing solution, without losing the focus on innovating and continuously delivering new features, fascinates me. What is more, this growth is a great challenge from the engineering perspective since we have to design and implement each component focusing on large scales.

DataXu’s core values are: Excellence, Collaboration, Innovation, Trust and Customer Obsession… the value that resonates with you most is….

Collaboration. I think this is one of the key attributes of DataXu’s team. I work with different members of our engineering squads on daily basis, trying to coordinate our efforts for building reusable modules that can facilitate my work but also be used for other purpose in the future. Believe me when I say that, as a remote worker, if there is no collaboration, it would be impossible to do my work.

Word Association Time!

  • I say programmatic, you say….
    • Awesome!
  • Most exciting aspect of Adtech
    • That is continuously changing, leaving a room for innovation and improvement. There’s always something new to learn.
  • I say DataXu, you say…
    • Data science, big data, innovation
  • How do you relax?
    • I like reading, crossfit and watching rugby (unfortunately, can’t play anymore)
  • Fun fact
    • My dog wakes me up every morning crying, yes crying, not barking….really
  • Life advice
    • Never give up what you want to accomplish no matter how difficult the situation is at the moment. Hard things to get are often the ones that matter the most. Always challenge yourself to your limits.
